In a recent development, there were news that Mumbai Metro will be receiving the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission grant (JNNURM). It will be the first private project in the nation to receive such grant.
The JNNURM grant is given to the local projects related to drinking water, sewage development or drainage facilities. However, the ministry of urban development expects to come out with a decision on this very soon.

Right now, the Mumbai Metro project is undertaken by Anil Dhirubhai Ambani's Reliance energy. The first corridor of Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar is being built in a public private partnership pattern. The cost of this phase is roughly around 2,400 crore INR and getting a grant from JJNURM would mean roughly a sum of 500 crore INR.
In another news from Economic Times, that the state government has decided not to involve in Public Private Partnership model for the remaining 8 corridors of the metro project. This would discourage a lot of private investors who want to try and earn some profits from this project. This also comes to surprise to many people because if this idea gets a go from the state government, then many concerned would feel that the metro would not be as well maintained as the privately owned one would be.
