Chinese Firm to make Rakes for Mumbai Metro
June 11, 2008
Bhargav Sura
How would you feel to get off from a regular jam-packed, hot, smelly train into an air-conditioned, comfortable coach? Life will change all of a sudden. This is what the MM1 is planning to do.
A Chinese Firm bagged the rights to make the rakes for the Mumbai Metro. The South Locomotive Nanzing Puzhen Rolling Stock company from China has been one of the brutal force for the transportation in China. The same company will be given the responsibility of manufacturing the rolling stocks for the Mumbai Metro.
The coaches will be completely air-conditioned. People will be using smart card technology to entry and exit from the train. The comfort experienced by the people will be one of the best they have ever seen along with tight security. In addition to this, the first corridor of the Mumbai metro, expected to be completed by 2010, will be running 18.5 hours a day from 5:30 in the morning to 12 midnight. Initially the frequncy of the trains will be every 3.5 minutes. Increasing rakes and time will see more frequencies of the trains in the future.
The Mumbai Metro stations at Ghatkopar and Andheri will be constructed in such a way that people will be able to walk to the regular stations at Andheri and Ghatkopar after getting down from the Mumbai Metro station. If not, an elevated bridge is proposed to connect the suburban stations of Andheri and Ghatkopar respectively with the Metro stations of Andheri and Ghatkopar.
Once the Mumbai Metro starts going, people will heave a sigh of relief from the regular suburban trains. So far the travel from Borivali to Churchgate takes just 1 hour (approximately). But that time is filled with pushes and punches from the people who over-crowd the coaches, hot air (the fans in the suburban railway coaches can't even prove their existence), and the fear of getting robbed of your personal properties like cellphones or gold chain. But once the Mumbai Metro starts, people will look forward to a new generation of traveling and hopefully chip in to preserve that new Metro service.
