The Bombay Metro (Mumbai Metro) has been one of the most aspiring projects for BMC and the Maharashtra state government.

Being a cosmopolitan city, Mumbai is experiencing a rise in population every single day due to births in the city and migration of people from all over India.

Travelling in the city is becoming increasingly congesting. The only lifeline of Mumbai that can take you from one end of the city to other end in an hour are the trains. But trains are over populated with people climbing over the roof tops of train and continuing their journey.

The roads are already packed with cars. To add to these problems, new cars are being added to the roads of Mumbai and makes one wonder about the time to reach the other end of the city. With this being said, efforts are being made by the state government and BMC to provide relief to the people of Mumbai.

Mumbai Metro is one of the many solutions that the state government along MMRDA and BMC is undertaking. The Mumbai Metro will be a elevated metro link which will be completed in three different phases.

  • The first phase will be constructed from Versova via Andheri to Ghatkopar. It will be around 11.4 km stretch and will connect the central and western suburbs of Mumbai. The project's inaguration took place in 2006 when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh performed the ground-breaking (Bhumi Pujan) ceremony. However, the first construction only started in Februay 2008. The project is undertaken by the famous Anil Ambani's Reliance Energy Limited. The reason for this 2-year delay is unsurprisingly the politics in India. This phase will include stations like Versova, Azad Nagar, DN Nagar, Andheri, Chakala, Western Express Highway, Marol Naka, Airport Road, Saki Naka, Subhash Nagar, and Ghatkopar. The government and the Reliance Energy (also known as Reliance Energy ADA Limited) are expecting to complete the work and roll their first stock as early as 2010. The constructions have begun in full swing. The Reliance Energy boards can be seen put up along the roads near Andheri. However, we will have to keep our fingers crossed on the project as many unexpected halts may come in the way.

  • Details of the second phase and the third phase will be updated very soon.
