The Kalpasar, Project (Source: NEERI)
April 3, 2008

The Kalpasar Project has been one of the most talked projects of the Gujarat Government. However due to unwanted matters and obstructions, the projects proposal was rejected.

On July 20, 2007, the project was approved according to the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) website.

What is the project about?

The Kalpasar Project aims at providing fresh water  and hydro-electric energy by building a dam across the Gulf of Khambat from Bhavanagar District to Bharuch District, collecting water from many of the rivers that drain into the Gulf, including the Narmada and Sabarmati.

Road and Rail lines on the Dam will also improve connectivity between the Southern region of the Kathiawad peninsula and the Bharuch/Surat region of Gujarat, vastly cutting travelling times between the areas.

What are the specifications of the Dam?

This dam would be as much as 64 km long. "It is envisaged to create a fresh water basin of more than 2000 km2 which will receive water from twelve rivers flowing into Gulf including excess water from Narmada, Mahi, Sabarmati and Dadhar "[Source].

What will be the impact of the project on the society and environment?

Hopefully, constructing this project will solve for many of the electrical power problem in Gujarat. It will also provide water for irrigation for the population as well as have much impacts on the development of the ports along the coastline of Gujarat.
