Sabarmati, one of the most important rivers in the history of India is under a real danger just like many other rivers of India. This river's bank is home to Mahatma Gandhi's ashram or Sabarmati Ashram. In addition to this the river also provides water for irrigation to farmers, drinking water, and other domestic uses. However in the past few years, the river is being contaminated due to sewage, garbage, industrial wastes, causing hazards to the environment and the surrounding natural habitat. In addition to this, the population on the banks of the river is the most affected during rainy season due to floods occuring because of filth and the garbage in the river.
The condition of the river is really sad because it lies neglected and not a lot of efforts have been made by the government in the past to improve its condition.
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has undertaken the Sabarmati Riverfront Development and formed the Sabarmati River Front Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL) in 1997 (Source) to improve the condition of the rivers and also to bring about a major development along the banks of the river providing a glorious view for the people.
